This button from one of Nancy Johnson’s many re-election campaigns echoes the colors of the Connecticut state flag. During her nearly quarter century in the House, Johnson became the first Republican woman to gain a seat on the influential Ways and Means Committee. As the dean, or longest-serving Member, of the Connecticut delegation, she eventually served as the highest-ranking woman in the history of that committee.
