Object Details

The seated statue of George Washington by Horatio Greenough, shown here on the East Front lawn, was commissioned in 1832 on the centennial of the first President’s birthday. It was installed in the Capitol Rotunda after completion, and then relocated to the east lawn of the Capitol in 1843. Greenough envisioned the statue to be a symbolic representation of Washington as a great exemplar of liberty, presented in the fashion of a Greek god.
