Object Details

This stereoview was taken just before a massive undertaking that transformed the Capitol grounds, and it captures what the East Front looked like in the post–Civil War period. The Architect of the Capitol’s office was in the little frame structure on the right. The trees on the left side of the image, planted to frame the approach to the building, blocked the view by the 1860s. Soon, house and trees would be gone. Frederick Law Olmsted, America’s great landscape architect, removed them in the 1870s to make way for his completely new setting for the enlarged Capitol building.
