This book illustration from an unknown German-language publication shows a view of Washington, D.C., from nearby Arlington, Virginia. A nearly identical view was published by D. Appleton & Co. in 1872, a firm that also produced the well-known series of lavishly illustrated books Picturesque America. The chapter heading, “Eastern North America and Appalachia,” makes it likely that this print was created for a similar publication.
