Congressman Godlove Orth of Indiana took up pen and paper on behalf of an American clergyman traveling to Germany. Orth provided Reverend George Seibert with a letter of introduction to George Bancroft, diplomatic minister to Berlin. The missive was written on official House stationery, which during the 1870s combined elaborate typefaces and engravings with practical lined paper.
