Object Details

At this Joint Session, Congress assembled to hear President Warren Harding speak on the coal and railroad strikes, both of which turned violent in the summer of 1922. Owners hired strikebreakers after union workers protested their wages being cut to prewar levels. Harding vowed to “use the power of government to maintain transportation,” and the following month the Attorney General obtained an injunction that prohibited strikers from speaking or protesting in virtually any fashion, written or verbal.
