Object Details

On his 78th birthday, just before opening the second session of his ninth Congress as Speaker, Sam Rayburn posed on the rostrum with his chair. Capitol furniture craftsmen made it for Rayburn in 1941, at the start of his speakership. Although a newer, identical chair has since been made for everyday use in the Chamber, Rayburn’s original chair is used today for the opening of each new Congress.
