Object Details

A stereoview of Statuary Hall shows the space soon after it was declared a new home for artwork in the Capitol. A cast of Jean-Antoine Houdon’s statue of George Washington faces Vinnie Reams' Abraham Lincoln. The first state statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection span the back wall. Frances Bicknell’s First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln is creatively suspended between two columns. John Neagle’s full-length portrait of Henry Clay—which was acquired in 1871, just before the date of this image—hangs on the back wall.
