This familiar view of the Capitol’s East Front appeared in Die Gartenlaube, a popular German illustrated weekly newspaper. Published in Leipzig, the periodical was aimed at the middle classes and deemed a “friend of the family,” both for its instructive and entertaining content and generous use of images with text. The Capitol exterior was completed two years before this publication, during the Civil War, and its image appeared frequently in international periodicals.
