Representative John McCormack spent 42 years in service to the House, 10 of those years as Speaker. He was photographed here with the symbol of his presiding position, a gavel, this particular one made of wood from each of the 50 states. Under his leadership, the House passed landmark legislation in civil rights, education, anti-poverty initiatives, and health care for the elderly.
