This photographic portrait commemorates Jan Meyer’s chairmanship of the House Committee on Small Business. She took up the gavel in 1995, a capstone to a long political careers. Meyers first won elected office in 1972 when she won her first race, for the Kansas state senate. Her decades in public life led her to give this advice to new politicians: “Listen to your conscience and your constituents—both. Most of the time they’ll agree."
