Object Details

Celebrations at the Capitol during presidential inaugurations got bigger through the 19th century. In 1885, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper printed engravings of Grover Cleveland’s swearing-in on the Capitol’s East Front. Members of the audience saluted the new President with hats held high, or better yet, tossed in the air. Pages of breathless prose accompanied the images, describing every detail, from the morning “breeze which floated the flags and stirred the bunting” to the “many-colored fireworks, which caused the natural lights of the firmament, for the time being, to twinkle dimly in their spheres.”
