Speaker Champ Clark was not just a powerful political figure. He was also an international cigar brand. This label is from the Netherlands, and proclaims that Champ Clark tobacco is “truly… a king’s cigar!” Tobacco manufacturers used notable men and symbols of power to give cigar labels the air of exclusivity and privilege. In this case, the effort was so successful that among the Dutch, Clark was more famous as a cigar than a politician. European versions capitalized on the brand recognition of American versions, even as they updated the typeface and design to reflect a continental aesthetic sense, and in this example gave a crown to the leader of the "People's House."
