Virginia’s brilliant eccentric, John Randolph, first served in the House in 1799. Over his long career, he sported flashy clothes, dominated floor debates, engaged in several duels, and generally embraced being a dangerous outsider. He turned a biting wit against anyone who crossed him, and sometimes even against himself: "I am an aristocrat. I love liberty, I hate equality."
