Charles Pickett of Iowa had a name with potential, and he used it. His home state’s flower, the wild prairie rose, winds around a picket fence on this elaborate and beautifully executed button from 1901. An ornate button was impressive, but for good measure, there is also a ribbon that bears the legend “Put Our ‘Pickett’ On Guard,” a reference to the military practice of using a picket, or small unit of soldiers, as forward guards.
