Metal discs with a foldover tab were a cheaper alternative to a campaign button. The image was printed directly on the metal, which limited the colors and kinds of images possible, but allowed a candidate to order thousands of them, stamped from a single sheet of tin. Charles Sandman chose bright blue and black for this tab, probably from his first campaign in 1966. Less than a decade later, Sandman’s staunch support of President Nixon during the 1974 impeachment hearings cost him his seat.
