A newspaper photographer captured Speaker Nicholas Longworth taking advantage of the 1929 August recess at home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Longworth’s marriage to glamorous Alice Roosevelt, daughter of former President Theodore Roosevelt, made his private life a matter for the society pages. On the same day as Longworth was immortalized golfing in white flannel trousers, the New York Times reported his family’s arrival in Newport, Rhode Island.
