This 1934 photograph shows the rostrum of the newest House Office Building’s caucus room. Although intended as a general assembly room, the handsome hall became the permanent hearing room for the Ways and Means Committee four years later. Because of its capacity to seat 450 people, it was also briefly repurposed in 1949 as the House Chamber, while the original underwent renovation. The grand space was returned to Ways and Means the following year.
