Interest in the American Civil War extended beyond the English-language press. This print of the “American War—Bird’s-eye view of the war theater on the Potomac in the state of Virginia” is from Le Monde Illustré, a French illustrated weekly. An identical view was published in the American paper Harper’s Illustrated Weekly in January 1862. It marks the locations of Washington, D.C., area forts, towns, bodies of water, and landmarks, including the Capitol and the Washington Monument.
