Object Details

In the months after the new House wing of the Capitol was completed, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper published a series of images of its grand rooms. The cover of the June 5 edition gave pride of place to the Hall of Columns. The artist emphasized the depth of the space by way of the receding lines of columns and ceiling coffers. The accompanying description touted the “rich and elaborate” Corinthian columns and described the floor mosaics as “the most beautiful feature of the hall.”
