Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith changed the U.S. patent system when he co-authored (with Senator Patrick Leahy) the 2011 Leahy-Smith American Invents Act. In this portrait, a copy of the AIA, with prominent signatures of Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama, hangs on the wall behind the Texas Representative. Judicial scales allude to Smith's leadership of the Judiciary Committee, one of three committees he chaired.
