From 1915 to 1921, Charles Caldwell represented New York in the House and served on the Military Affairs Committee. Caldwell also practiced law, and he founded a camp for veterans in the Adirondacks. In this portrait by Washington, D.C., studio Harris & Ewing, the camera created a shallow depth of field. Only the area between Caldwell’s nose and cheeks is in focus, drawing the viewer to his eyes.
