Harris & Ewing, a photographic studio based in Washington, D.C., created luminous portraits in a distinctive style. Using sophisticated lighting, the studio evoked natural sunlight to produce high-quality images, as seen in this ca. 1921 portrait of Representative William Atkeson. Harris & Ewing captured Members of Congress, Presidents, actors, buildings, and events, and grew to be the most successful studio in the country during its heyday in the first half of the century.
