Congressman and Civil War veteran H.J.B. Cummings is depicted in this engraving that bears his facsimile signature. He joined the Army in July 1861 and was promoted to the rank of colonel the following year. After he was honorably discharged in late December of 1864, Cummings went on to become a Representative of Iowa in the 45th Congress.
