“Your outstanding congressman” Wayne Hays probably provided this matchbook as a souvenir of a visit to his Washington office. Many Representatives used matchbooks not only as campaign gimmicks but also as giveaways to visiting constituents. The photo of the Capitol dome and Great Seal of the United States made even a small memento like this seem part of a civic pilgrimage.
