Assistant Sergeant at Arms A.C. Jordan posed with the mace, the symbol of the House of Representatives’ authority. The Sergeant at Arms is responsible for law enforcement and protocol in the House of Representatives. In the 1920s, assistants such as Jordan had the duty of carrying the mace into the chamber each morning. Jordan, previously the Sergeant at Arms of the Kansas state legislature, kept up his Sunflower State connections with his prize-winning mule farm back home.
