Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gift of William P. Davis
Object Details
The stakes were always high for Helen Gahagan Douglas. She entered politics passionately advocating for civil rights, income-based taxation, and global awareness of injustices. Her House service was punctuated by the Atomic Energy Act of 1946, a bill Douglas introduced ensuring civilian oversight of atomic weapons. A run for Senate in 1950 against Richard Nixon ended her political career, but not before she coined the oft-used phrase, “Tricky Dick.”
