Printed gallery passes like this were a rarity before the 1890s. In fact, this little card for the visitors’ gallery is the earliest surviving example in the House Collection. The practice of reserving areas of the galleries for visitors and other groups who had written permission began in 1880, when the House designated one section of seats for “accommodation of persons to be admitted on the card of Members.”
