Longtime Clerk of the House South Trimble was a former Representative from Kentucky. In the Capitol, he was a long, lean, and colorful figure who ran the House with genial efficiency. He first arrived as a Member in 1901, and died as Clerk of the House in 1946. Over his decades on the Hill, stories of his quirky humor accumulated. On one occasion, he invited Democratic Party leaders to a “reed-bird-pie” dinner, the main course of which turned out to be pesky starlings, the scourge of the Capitol buildings. Trimble had shot the birds himself.
