Object Details

A hundred years after the Congress first met in the new capital, Washington, D.C., Harper’s Weekly magazine marked the occasion. This issue included a look back at all the buildings where Congress had convened. Artist Charles Upham’s moonlit view of the Capitol commanded the center. Less iconic, temporary spots, like the courthouse in York, Pennsylvania, and Nassau Hall in Princeton, New Jersey, are included in surrounding vignettes.
