In the 1840s, the Capitol grounds—22½ acres in all—were bounded by a stone balustrade with an iron railing, shown in this print from an early guidebook. The West Front of the Capitol was not the main entrance, but it faced the river from atop Capitol Hill, and became a popular façade for artists to depict.
