This print from Morrison’s Stranger’s Guide to Washington introduced the reader to the Capitol “springing so airily into the sky.” The slender book offered a multi-day itinerary for touring the city. The first day’s jaunt was to “the Capitol and all east of it,” and included an exhaustive trip through the Capitol and its artwork, as well as the nearby parks and buildings. This image, oddly, shows the view in the opposite direction from the Capitol, looking west down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House.
