This print was one of 95 engravings in the book The History and Topography of the United States Illustrated with a Series of Views by John Howard Hinton. More than a dozen artists contributed to the volume, which was valued in Europe for what at least one newspaper review called the “superior engravings.” The title page image of the Capitol’s East Front was unusual in showing the building head-on rather than at an angle.
