Julia Butler Hansen was a political powerhouse whose career lasted more than 43 years, through positions at the city, state, and federal levels. She was first elected in the 86th Congress after the death of her district's previous Representative, and remained in office for the next 14 years. On Hansen's campaign button, she clearly aligned herself with her political party, a significant choice in that she was one of only two Democrats to represent the state of Washington at the time.
