Millicent Fenwick of New Jersey was described as both the “Katharine Hepburn of politics” for her famously patrician, outspoken persona and the “conscience of Congress” for her commitment to human rights and campaign finance reform. One of several women older than 60 to start their congressional careers in 1974, Fenwick was part of what the press dubbed a “geriatric triumph.”
