This elegant postcard lends an elegiac look to the Capitol’s silhouette. The vantage point, looking from the southeast toward the House side of the Capitol, was popular in the 20th century. The artist, Harry Campbell Ficklin, was a notably eccentric figure in his native Danville, Virginia: an artist, writer, historian, and what one newspaper called “the stormy petrel of local politics.”
