A roiling debate over monetary policy preoccupied the nation in the 1870s, and was the subject of this Thomas Nast cartoon. Moneyed interests in government, dressed as an Uncle Sam puppet master, waved an empty threat of inflation before the House Chamber. The cartoon itself is notable for its accurate depiction of the Chamber’s marble rostrum and Walter chair, something Nast deployed several times in large satirical images like this one.
