Franklin Pierce and a splendid procession of statesmen passed through the Capitol to Pierce’s inauguration on the East Front Portico, but the Rotunda’s architecture gave this print its grandeur. It is one of the few extant views of the 1824 interior. In 1863, the current higher dome was completed, which raised the roof to 288 feet.
