By the late 20th century, Representatives’ photographs took on a consistent appearance, similar to that of painted portraits in the House. A head-and-shoulders photograph such as this one of Illinois Congresswoman Melissa Bean, with an American flag in the background and a House of Representatives’ Member pin on the lapel, became the standard for most images of Members.
