Joel Heatwole was a newspaper publisher in Minnesota before he ran for Congress. Journalism's rough-and-tumble training served him well once he entered politics. Rival newspapers regularly made fun of his self-importance. Tongue firmly in cheek, the Duluth News-Tribune referred to him as “the physical Adonis and intellectual Hercules of the Minnesota congressional delegation.”
