To earn extra cash, 19th century Pages collected lists like this one, with the names of Representatives seeking copies of particularly fine House speeches. In this case, congressmen ordered 4,500 copies of Benjamin Butler’s address on civil service reform (2,000 requested by Butler himself). The enterprising lad who took the orders earned a $1.35 commission from the printer.
