Object Details

In the 1860s, the former House Chamber was a catch-all space for displays, events, and even storage. In 1868, an array of prizes that Americans had won at the Paris Exposition, a world’s fair of manufactured goods, were displayed in the space. Newspaper reports trumpeted the “192 objects of interest” mounted in cases “covered with rich velvet.” Artist James Taylor, who sketched many legislative scenes in the Capitol that year, showed not only the winners’ medals and certificates, but also the well-dressed tourists there to appreciate them.
