This image of the East Front of the Capitol was one of the most frequently depicted views in foreign accounts of America. The Capitol was one of the largest buildings in the United States, and its classical architecture immediately telegraphed the idea of a civilized, European-influenced society to readers in Italy (as in this example) and across the continent.
