Representative Shirley Pettis ran for Congress in a 1975 special election, after her husband died in office. In 1977, in an effort to keep his memory in constituents’ minds, she sent out Christmas cards with a picture of the chapel at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans’ Hospital, named for her husband. In this card, she noted that the chapel bas-reliefs were commissioned as a memorial to him.
