Thaddeus Stevens was a titanic figure in the House of Representatives. He was physically frail, but burned with an incandescent rage against slavery. Stevens was also a master politician and powerful legislator. After leading the Ways and Means Committee for four years, he became the first chairman of the newly-created Appropriations Committee in 1865. A century later, the committee honored him by commissioning a tinted copy of a Mathew Brady photograph of Stevens from the collection of the National Archives.
