Isaac McKim of Maryland campaigned to fill a vacant seat for the 17th Congress. After serving two terms in Congress, he took a break for several years to be director of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, before returning once again to the House in 1833. On his death, a citizen of his congressional district commented that, “the historian will record his name in the pages of our history, as a useful citizen a great merchant and a valuable private and public man."
