Eleven House Members signed a letter to the House Chaplain, Reverend Ralph Randolph Gurley, requesting that Reverend J. M. Allen preach in the Hall of the House. A Connecticut abolitionist and clergyman, Gurley was never ordained, although he preached as a Presbyterian while serving as the House Chaplain in the early and mid-19th century.
