Object Details

This charming, seated donkey was painted and personalized in 1967 for Representative Hale Boggs, Sr., a Democrat from Louisiana. The shape of the piece combines the familiar 19th-century symbol of the Democratic Party with the mid–20th century hobby of collecting animal figurines. Boggs’ 31–year run as a Representative in Congress ended tragically with his death in a 1972 plane crash over Alaska.
