Representative J. J. Pickle’s green campaign buttons were legendary. He pioneered the use of the pickle when he ran for student body president at the University of Texas in Austin in 1937. Squeaky pickle toys joined the buttons in the 1960s, and the Congressman distributed pickle paraphernalia to everyone from babies to Presidents during his three decades in the House.
