A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nicholas Longworth served for 25 years in the House, including six years as Speaker. In this photograph, he wields a gavel at the Speaker's Rostrum. In reference to the parliamentary role of the Speakership, Longworth said “I shall endeavor to administer with the most rigid impartiality, with an eye single to the maintenance in the fullest degree of the dignity and honor of the House and the rights and privileges of its Members.” Longworth died unexpectedly from pneumonia in 1931 at the age of 61.
